We’d love to hear about the inspiration, process and your emotions you felt during the process of working upon the featured track.
‘’Stumble a song about those people in your life who wreck your head but who are always there for you, no matter what. To you, they are both the rain and the shelter from it, the shadow and the light, the cure and the cause and it’s hard to let go of what is holding you back from moving forward with them. Stumble is about that person who dances on your last nerve with a smile on their face, yet they are your most fierce protector.
Sometimes it’s difficult to know what to say or where to start when getting a pulse on where you stand with someone like this. Yet, even when you don’t know what to say, you are certain that you’ll both come through for each other. When it all hits the fan, this person has your back, in all weathers, anywhere, in every ending, always.
Even if you lose everything, including yourself, they’re right behind you, ready to jump in and be your guide as they have done several times before. The love you both share isn’t an easy one but it’s most definitely one worth fighting for.
A song of devotion and loyalty.’’
Fill us in on how the track came into fruition.
I wrote Stumble with John Doherty over a couple of Zoom calls this year. I really enjoyed writing with John, he’s extremely talented and a very lovely person. We met at Views of The Valley songwriting retreat and thought it was a shame that we didn’t write a song together at that camp. So we hatched a plan to sit down one day over Zoom and we chatted about the significance of these kinds of relationships and how important it is to take care of them. How wonderfully weird and frustrating they can be but ultimately they are beautiful and pure.
The song came together quickly, it came from the heart.
What came first, the lyrics or the melody?
The lyric ‘Even if I stumble’ was front of mind when writing this track. It was a great guide to have. A simple line but one that held so much weight, there were many possibilities of how that lyrics could grow. We wrote the track with piano and Stumble was written pretty quickly. That night we made a demo of Stumble and fell in love with the song instantly.
We wanted to paint a sonic picture of that person who is the night and the day, the rain and the shelter from it, the light and the shadow it creates. These relationships are paradoxes! They’re so interesting. I think they’re the best relationships, they’re so real.
Did anything change in the studio or did it all fall perfectly into place? Let us know!
We recorded Stumble in Cologne, Germany and John was flying in the following day. Luca Janzen and I had actually changed up the chords in the chorus to something more dark. When John arrived the following day, he coaxed us back to the bright side and we switched back to the original chords, thankfully! The original chords were much more humble and fitting. In terms of production, we had a clear vision of the soundscape we wanted to create and it came together pretty quickly. Luca who produced the track is insanely talented and great to work with.
Side note: There was a sort of heatwave in Cologne the week we were there recording and I will honestly never forget how hot it felt. It was cruel. I also packed the heaviest clothes; I think I even brought some kind of a coat with me. I am the world’s worst packer.
As always, there is more to explore in the void!
