Cruel Sister
the young Dublin newcomer known to her friends as Faith Nico has been gently bubbling beneath the musical waves of the unforgiving Irish Sea, and today she shares her debut EP girls my age. Tapping into her love of early 90’s grunge, shoegaze and alt-indie – notably early PJ Harvey, Wolf Alice and Sister era Sonic Youth. Following a fantastic set at Electric Picnic, Cruel Sister also plans to rock her headline show Upstairs at Whelan’s, Dublin on the 28th of October 2022!

From the Heart
Cruel Sister writes from the heart exposing the angst and uncertainty of being young in all aspects of life but predominantly the trials and tests of love. Faith writes, produces and mixes all of her own music which she owes to her musical upbringing. She has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was 11 years old and started producing herself when she was 19 – “I decided to produce everything myself because I knew I was the only one who could make the sound I wanted”

Girls My Age
The EP title, “girls my age” pertains to the self-perceived trajectory of one’s life & through the female gaze, comparing yourself to peers. Faith muses “am I successful enough? Do I have enough money? Have I travelled enough? Have I loved enough? Is my brain okay? Is my life “normal” for someone my age? That “age” can be any age at all, I feel we all find ourselves questioning what our existence means, and I feel that this EP is me contemplating the existential.”
Speaking on the EP Faith says “I have been working on this for in total nearly two years now, most of these songs were born in lockdown, a time where I experienced a lot of love, a lot of heartbreak, a lot of alienation, and a LOT OF EXISTENTIAL DREAD. And also a lot of anime. The polishing of these songs, however, finally happened this year. I never really thought I would get much attention at all on my music so I felt it didn’t quite matter if it wasn’t to the best of my ability and I was just willing to throw some tracks out there sounding like something I would have made in GarageBand in 6th class. But I decided that they deserve better, and I knew that I could make them better. So I spent more time mixing, and re-recording and re-writing some parts. The end result is a body of work I’m very happy to put out into the world.”

Sister Sister
Sister Sister, the lead single from the EP, was inspired by the religious, mythological imagery that Pixies have in their lyrics. Alongside its release comes a DIY video Faith says “(She) filmed on a fucking torrential day in phoenix park with one umbrella, a camera, and a dream. virgos get shit done what can i say xxx”.

Behind “Cruel Sister”
Her artist name Cruel Sister is aptly inspired by the traditional murder ballard ‘The Twa Sisters’ (The Twin Sisters), which dates back to the mid 17th century. The song recounts the tale of a girl drowned by her jealous sister over a love triste. When the body of the younger, fair haired sister washes up to the shore, someone turns her body into a harp, using bone for the frame and her golden hair as the strings. The elder, dark haired sister is then publicly shamed as the murderess.
