Lewwab and Mikey Cullen’s “LUNATIC”

A Hip-Hop and Electronic Clash

LEWWAB are an electronic duo hailing from Cork but based in Dublin. The pair effortlessly fuse piano, percussion and synth amongst other electronic ambient sounds in their music, with the two striving to “create good music and share that music to a live audience”.

LEWWAB (otherwise known as Lara and Anna) formed at the end of 2018 when they moved to Belgium together to explore the vibrant live electronic music scene that Brussels had to offer. Returning home in 2019, LEWWAB began working on their debut EP ‘Flowers’, which was released in May of 2020 and was well received through air play from RTE 2fm’s Dan Hegarty throughout the year. On this project, you can hear the electronic duo in their early stages of developing their atmospheric electronic ambient sound.  A year later in August of 2021, they released their sophomore EP “Laser Pop”. This project received success in the Irish music scene, garnering attention from Spotify playlists such as Hands in the Éire and received major radio play across national stations. With this EP, you can hear how they continue to perfect and refine their style of music, displaying their trademark melodic and airy electronic sound, surrounded by a whirlwind of gorgeous ambient elements.

Mikey Cullen is a poet, spoken word artist, actor and lyricist spanning multiple genres. His poetry has been published and featured both in print and online in various publications and he regularly performs both his poetry, spoken word and music at events and festivals around Ireland. His poetry has also been spoken and featured on Irish radio many times. He was commissioned to write a poem, titled ‘In US’, for the Guinness X Seanchoiche partnership in 2023.

Now, LEWWAB and Mikey Cullen have joined forces for LEWWAB’s first single of the year “LUNATIC”. This track is quite hip-hop driven, an unfamiliar direction for the duo to go in but one they excel in on this latest effort of theirs. The heavy, distorted bass that can be heard thumping throughout the song, which keeps a gritty energy going within the track, this is then complimented by an array of pretty, sparkling synths with some glitch going on there in the mix as well. As well as this, we can hear a sample of a 1994 Memphis rap DJ Paul and Juicy J song “Psychopathic Lunatic” playing throughout the song, this further displays the hip-hop energy that is prominent on the track Amongst the clash of hip-hop, electronic music and ambience going on here, Mikey Cullen finds his voice amongst the noise and delivers some insightful yet existential spoken word, the Beaumont born wordsmith lets us know that none of us are perfect, assuring listeners that “normalcy is a fallacy, we’re all a fucking lunatic”.

LUNATIC will be released 2nd February on all streaming platforms.
